Facebook for Musicians – A Waste of Time?

alheva_facebookUnless you haven’t already heard Facebook has changed its business model dramatically since it was first introduced.  The power of Facebook was touted as this incredible viral platform because once you posted something on someone else’s timeline all their friends would see it and if one of them shared it all their friends would see in… so on and so forth.  And when it comes to Fan Pages you used to be able to post news or a song and it would go to all your fans newsfeeds.  This multiplicative effect was THE power of Facebook.

Guess what?  Its GONE!
Yep, no more of that because if they just let you share your stuff with everyone they wouldn’t make any money on advertising fees.  So now what we have is this thing called “edge rank”, which basically ranks content according to importance.  If your not in someones family or favorites chances are their friends will never see your post, songs or videos.  On top of that edge rank now allows for people to pay $$$ cold hard cash to share their posts to get more favorability in the edge ranking algorithm.

virality-change-edgerankIs it True?
As shown in a recent study from Edge Rank Checker, as of March 4th, 2013, the average ‘virality’ rate of a post on Facebook fan page only 1.5%. This means that of your 100 fans, only 1.5 of them (on average) will share the content with their communities.

So What the Hell Do We Do?
Barring some really incredibly viral content like Gangam Style or 15 years of work every day it all comes down to $$$$.   Users of Facebook are being forced to advertise or die.  Yes it sucks ass, but what its a harsh reality we need to face.   But before you go pouring thousands of dollars or even hundreds of dollars into Facebook you need a strategy to capture these fans, engage them and sell them lots of music from you.
