Ever feel like you don’t have a shot at the big time?
Ever feel like you’re out gunned in songwriting? Think again… you may actually be outgunning 90% of musicians and just need some marketing advice. If you simply turn on the radio or go to a concert at your local 5,000 seat venue you’ll find 90% of the music is just plain average.
Compared to What?
If you listen to Grammy winning songs from the 70’s verses Grammy winning songs from the new millennia, with a few exceptions, you’ll find a striking difference in the quality and level of songwriting.
The real comparison comes down to longevity. Does the music that was written become timeless and desirable to future generations or does it get lost in the 90% of bubble gum forgettable Spice Girl sludge.
In contrast to the forgettables, artists like Bob Marley, Paul Simon, Carroll King, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kahn, Paul McCartney, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan and many others the 70’s are still touring and gaining new fans from younger generations. Of course there was a lot of average music in the 70’s as well, but things in the music business simply are NOT the same.
Most music that makes money today is made to cater to a market that likes average music. Why, because most people are average. This may sound a bit simplistic, but that’s the reality. This is why Jazz, which is much more complex than pop music, makes less money. So what can a modern day musician learn from the money trail in music?
The most important thing is not to focus on making music to make money. This is the 90%, which are forgotten and end up broke, even if they were a one hit wonder. In the long run you’re much better off writing music to be timeless, music that really speaks from your soul instead of someone else.
To do this you gotta study the masters, yes, but eventually over time your own personality will emerge and translate into a style all your own. You’ll need to really dig down deep and have faith that if songwriters like the ones mentioned above can pull out these songs from what appears to be nowhere, then you too have the same inherent power.
Its all a matter of believing you have that power and through persistence that power will manifest something timeless from your mind and into the ears of the world. Then, even if you don’t hit the mark of the masters, you’ll still surpass that 90% of bubble gum spice girl sludge and have a shot at the big time.
To do this you’ll need marketing strategies that work for upcoming artists like yourself. Make sure you’re subscribed to this Music Launch Pad and we’ll update you on whether or not you qualify for a free Beta subscription to our educational courses.
