Songwriting – How to Write Hit Songs

While there are no guarantees to your songwriting skills becoming a hit making machine, there is a pattern to most songs, which become chart toppers. If youSongwriting have the desire and passion in writing songs, then you have most of what it takes to create music that becomes famous. All you need is to follow the right course to take your songwriting to the next level.

Write on Subjects that Move You

You want to write on subjects that drive you and others to an emotional response. It’s not surprising that love is the most popular subject of all hit songs in one form or another. However, it needs to be something that not only stirs your passion, but strikes on a personal level. Your song can reach out to others when you reach inside yourself. So, start off by writing about something which generates real feelings and go from there.

Brainstorm

Now that you know your subject, take a couple of minutes to brainstorm and write down everything that might cross your mind on the subject. Many songwriters have become frustrated because they spend too much time brainstorming, so use a timer to be sure that you only spend 1 hour or less at a time. From what you have written, use two of the descriptive words. For example, “Her hair was curly and golden” means that curly and golden are your keywords. Don’t worry, it will get better as you progress.

Make it Fresh

Another way to get into the right frame of mind is listening to the songs that are hits right now. Remember, the songs you hear were probably written at least a year ago, so what you want to do is add something of yourself to the mix. You want to steer away from the style that is famous right now and create something that is fresh and alive. What goes around, comes around in music, so selecting an older style is acceptable as well.

Get a Rhyming Dictionary

It helps your songwriting significantly if you can rhyme the words. It’s not always easy, but you can get a rhyming dictionary that helps. Remember, the words do not have to be exact rhymes, they can just be close which will do the trick.  We recommend Tune Smith in combination with its plugin called Rhyme Genie.  While other programs out there cost hundreds of dollars, you can’t go wrong for $25.

Create a Hook

Virtually all memorable hit songs have catchy hooks that are part of the chorus. That is where you want to focus your efforts so that the chorus itself hooks the audience.

Work with Others

You may have noticed that many hit songs are written by a team of writers, not just one person. This is because two heads are better than one which is why Paul McCartney and John Lennon were so successful with The Beatles. You have two choices, either join a team of writers or start up your own. The former may be difficult unless you have connections, but starting up your own team is easier. Many writers who are artist themselves work with a producer, engineer, and other writers.  Check out our Free Networking Search for connecting with songwriters in your area.
